My mother is very competent in looking after, raising, discussing and generally dealing with the subject of children. She raised me, and hopefully I'll be forgiven for asserting that she did a darn good job. She minds Ronan on a daily basis and seems to work her way through the various dilemmas, catch-22s, viper's nests and other various and sundry toddler-related messes with grace and ease.
Sometimes, let's be honest here, she makes me feel pretty darn clueless at the whole mothering thing.
It occurred to me today while chatting with a friend that there is a reason for that - she got through it. She experienced raising a child, and as such, became an expert as child-rearing. My friend asked if I thought I'd be any good at be the mother to a seven year-old. I said no. At the moment, my expertise is in parenting two year-olds.
I'd say I am getting pretty good at that. Mothering is a work in progress.
